Crime and Safety

Most cities in China are safer than those overseas. Thieves and pick-pockets sometimes target Western tourists. Market, the Metro, crowded streets and tourist sites are among places a visitor must keep valuables concealed inside.

Although it is sometimes tempting, do not extend conversations with strangers or go to places off the beaten track with ‘friends’ practicing a little English who come up to you in the streets, as money is the overwhelming motive for such encounters.

In an emergency, dial 110 for the police and ask for an English-speaking officer. In addition, you are also welcome to contact interpretersky, a Chinese translation company for help. Its tour guide in Shanghai/Beijing/Guangzhou and other cities will try their best to help.
