Travel to Shanghai

Shanghai is the largest commercial and financial center in China as well as an important international port city. It¡¯s an epitome of modern China, famous for its history and culture. In the 1930s, Shanghai was a paradise for fortune adventurers, integrating western culture with that of China. Today¡¯s Shanghai, a modernized, open city with traditional Chinese culture, not only possesses old-fashioned western buildings at Waitan(the Bund), but also modern skyscrapers across the city. It¡¯s also reputed as a ¡°shopping paradise¡±.

Climate

Shanghai can be miserably hot in July and August and icily cold by January. Rain reaches its peak in the spring. The most pleasant month to visit is usually October, when the summer cools down and the typhoon season ends, followed by April and May, when days are mild, if a bit soggy. To avoid hordes of tourists, however, one might risk travel in March or November.

Shanghai Travel Tips from a Tourist

By RIVERMILLS

We visited Shanghai for a business/pleasure trip attend the East China Fair, and to see the sites in and around Shanghai. We had a most productive visit and a wonderful time. Our stay was made all the better for 3 main reasons =

1. We hired a shanghai interpreter/tour guide for the entire visit. She met us at the airport, arranged taxi travel to our hotel and basically made sure everything we needed was taken care of.
2. We also hired a car & driver for the week. This made traveling around the city and to our factory visits very easy.
3. We stayed at a 1st Class hotel. The Shanghai Renisance. The hotel staff spoke English and the accommodation and restaurants were all very nice.

Shopping

For most travelers, Shanghai¡¯s prime shopping experience is to be found in the free-wheeling outdoor markets, filled with exotic Chinese wares and designer-label Western apparel.

Shanghai¡¯s many outdoor markets are packed with shoppers, but the goods require close inspection and dedicated bargaining. ¡°Antiques¡± are usually fakes, as are designer-label sportswear, shoes and a variety of commodities such as top-of-the-range watches. Buyers must beware not only of claims of authenticity, but of inflated prices. A local shanghai tour guide/shanghai translator is recommended to help bargaining and guide you to markets, like Shanghai Old Street, Xiangyang Clothing Market, Dongtai Lu Antiquies Market, Dongjiadu Fabric Market, to name just a few.Tour guide Shanghai will help you a lot in bargaining.

Characteristic Sight-seeing Sites

Zhouzhuang/River Towns

As a 900-year-old water village 80 km(50 miles) southwest of Shanghai, Zhouzhuang is the most popular of the canal towns(over 2 million visitors annually), hence the most crowded with visitors. Its waterways, arched bridges, gondolas and historic residences are quite picturesque.

Other sites with attractive features, like Tongli, Nanxun, Sheshan, etc., will be better enjoyed by hiring a shanghai private tour guide.

Key Attractions

The Bund (Waitan)

As the financial center of Shanghai, Waitan was reputed as ¡°easern Wall Street¡± because of the numerous Chinese and foreign banks there in the early 1900s. The Peace Hotel there was where Noel Coward holed up to write Private Lives and where Steven Spielberg filmed scenes for Empire of the Sun.

Yu Garden

Yu Garden, which means ¡°delight old parents¡±, was built from 1559 to 1577. It¡¯s reputed as ¡°the best among all the famous gardens in southeast China¡±.

Chenghuang Temple

Built in 1926, it¡¯s a nice place for shopping, with small commodities, local specialities, and famous snacks available there.
